QuFalle presents: In Between – Bar Bahar
"In Between – Bar Bahar" by Maysaloun Hamoud, Israel/France 2016, 102', OmeU
Laila (Mouna Hawa), Salma (Sana Jammalieh) and Nour (Shaden Kanboura) live together in an apartment in trendy Tel Aviv. During the day, Laila works as a lawyer, at night she parties hard in the city’s hottest nightspots. Salma works nights as a barwoman and DJ, while the younger Muslim Nour has moved to the city from her rural home to study. The three women share more than just an apartment. As Palestinians living in Israel, they are constantly torn between the traditional values they were brought up with and the freedom promised by the progressive urban lifestyle. They speak fluent Hebrew and Arabic and physically differ little from their Jewish contemporaries. But in their family lives and romantic relationships, they are forever caught between new and old values and traditional and (supposedly) liberal roles that frequently require them to perform a delicate balancing act.
Born in Budapest, Maysaloun Hamoud grew up in Deir Hanna, Israel.
She completed a BA degree in the history of the Middle East at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University and later studied Film at Minshar School of Art in Tel Aviv. She directed the short films Shades of Light, Sense of Morning and Salma, her graduation film which was nominated for the Israeli Film Academy Awards (Ophir Award) in the short film category. In Between is her first feature-length film.
Trigger warning: the film contains scenes of sexualized assault and/or violence which may be triggering for some/ for people.
