In light of recent events, in this public session we draw attention to the ZAD, or ‘Zone à défendre’, at Notre-dame-des-landes. For decades, the people living there have resisted a planned airport. In the process, they have realised a vision for another possible way of living together. They operate various self-organised projects, including agricultural work balancing the needs of humans and the natural world. They are organised as a collective. Early this year, they achieved their original aim: the airport will not be built. Despite their important work, as of the 8th of April they are under attack from the French state. The police are proceeding with violence against the defenders of the zone, including the use of tear gas, even though the ZAD is renowned worldwide as a bold model for solidarity and cooperation. States envision collective structures to be an unknown and direct challenge. Instead of accepting such structures, the emergence of such structures and places, and the concepts supporting them, are violently knocked back. Negotiated contracts — the only way to legally settle land — are only made with individuals or businesses, i.e. with the legal construction of natural persons or legal entities. For collective structures, which are more amorphous, ephemeral and unpredictable, there is no option. This meansthat this form of organisation — even as it realises other modes of living, including committing to keeping the environment intact — is criminalised. This is a tendency that can be observed playing out in other contexts, worldwide. The event in BLage will shift the focus to these aspects, while shedding light on the concept for, and existing structures of, the ZAD itself.
